DEEP DISH APPLE PIE

Updated: Jan 10, 2022

When I was a child, I can remember my mom making Apple pie during most holidays or just when she felt like baking, Apple pie was her go to recipe. She would make her pie with a double crust. This Apple pie recipe is easy as pie to make, I love the play on words, the only time-consuming task is peeling and slicing the apples, once that part is done the pie can be put together in no time at all. My mom would squeeze the lemon over the apples then mix the dry ingredients together and pour it over the apples. Then she would slice the butter and lay it over the apples then add the crust. I know this might seem a little strange to some but believe me the method works.

This is the only step that I did differently in the deep-dish version of this pie, I melted the butter and poured it over the apples, instead of slicing the butter pieces over the apples. The recipe is the same, but whichever way you decide to do the butter, the pie comes out amazing. When the pie bakes the butter melts and blends with the sugar and seasonings, then Wow! A delicious pie, and as I mentioned in my video, my mom said you will know when the pie is done when it cooks over, and that usually happens about 55 minutes during baking. Make sure the crust is golden brown and be sure to put the pie on a baking sheet to protect the bottom of your oven because some of the juices will cook over. Please see the recipe and video below and leave a comment once you try this recipe for yourself. Enjoy!!!

1 Tablespoons of Nutmeg

3 Tablespoons of Flour

1 1/2 Sticks of Butter (melted)

1 Egg and 1 Tablespoon of water to brush on top of pie

DIRECTIONS

Preheat Oven to 375F Degrees

Wash and peel apples and cut into slices medium cuts, not to thick and not too thin. Place Apples in large bowl and take the lemon and squeeze the juice from it with a juicer, or with your hand and coat apples with the lemon juice.

In medium bowl, mix white sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and flour together, making sure to blend well. Pour ingredients over apples, blending to coat apples, melt butter and pour over apples, blending well. Place 2 pie crusts in a 13x9 baking dish cover bottom of pan, trim dough if needed, pour apples in dish, and add top crust. Seal top crust and bottom crust together, pinching together or use a fork like in the video. Beat egg and add 1 tablespoon of water mixing well, then brush on top of pie crust, cut about 4 slits on top of pie crust to vent, place pie on sheet pan and bake at 375 for 50-55 minutes until golden brown. Enjoy!
