Twisted Sausage Peppers & Onions

This is my go too recipe when I want something quick and flavorful, this recipe does not take long to prepare. You would think that almost anyone can make sausages with peppers and onions, but after talking with a few people I found out that this was not true. I have made this recipe and taken it to bring-ins at work, for football games, parties or just making them for my family. And if I am making these during the holidays, I prepare them and put them in a crockpot until tender. When they are done, turn them on warm and they will stay nice and hot until ready to serve.

When making the sausages for this recipe I just use Italian hot sausages (mild) because my husband does not like spicy food at all and that is why in the video, I did not add any crush red pepper flakes or ground red pepper. But hey! Cook them to your own taste, you can get Jiggie with it. This is why I call these Twisted Sausage Peppers & Onions. If you like hot & spicy, then buy the extra hot sausages an you may not have to add any hot peppers in the sauce when you do. However, if you don’t like spicy food at all, then the Sweet Italian Sausages is an option.

The more I make this dish, I found out that even the next day they are just as good as the day before. this seems to be true when you make dishes with tomato-based sauces, it seems like the seasonings soak in the sauce and become more enhanced. You can use whatever sauce you like, but in this recipe, I used a Pasta sauce, which worked very well for this recipe, using a Pasta sauce gives you more flavor options and variety.

This is an easy to make recipe, it is not the way that the great Italian chefs would prepare this but trust me all of the flavors are there, try it out for yourself and leave a comment below of how yours turned out. 2 pounds of Hot Italian Sausage or Sweet Italian Sausage (whatever you like best)

2 tablespoons of vegetable oil

24 oz Jar of your favorite Pasta Sauce

1 Tablespoon of Garlic Powder

1 Teaspoon of Onion Powder

1 Teaspoon of Salt

1 Large Bell Pepper (Sliced)

1 Large Onion (sliced)

2 Tablespoons of Sugar

I Teaspoon of Ground Red Pepper (optional if you like it spicy}


In large skillet, brown sausages in oil on all sides until brown

Remove sausages from skillet. Do not drain oil.

Add 24 oz jar of your favorite Pasta sauce.

Add Garlic Powder, Onion Powder & Salt

Add 1 large Sliced Green Bell Pepper

Add 1 large Sliced Onion.

2 Tablespoons of Sugar

Bring all ingredients to a low boil, then cover and simmer for 1 hour until the sausages are tender. Serve on a crusted Hoagie bun. Enjoy
